Objective: To observe the therapeutic effect of application of herbal paste to Shenque (CV 8) for treatment of infantile upper respiratory tract infection. Methods: 142 cases of infantile upper respiratory tract infection were subjected into this study. Herbal paste Formula I processed from Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) and Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) and Formula Ⅱ processed from Huangqi (Radix Astragali seu Hedysari)
Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae)
etc were applied to Shenque (CV 8) respectively for the pattern of invasion of the lung Wei by exogenous pathogenic factors and the pattern of deficiency of the spleen Qi. The former pattern was attributed to acute stage of the upper respiratory tract infection and the latter to the remission stage after the symptoms of the acute stage being under control. Before fixing the drug paste
the local umbilicus was radiated with TDP lamp for 20 min. 12~16 hours later the drug paste was removed. This treatment was conducted twice every week
with 8 sessions being a therapeutic course. Results: After 2 courses of treatment
of the 142 cases
36 (25.3%) were cured
46 (32.4%) had marked improvement
47 (33.1%) had improvement and 13 (9.1%) had no significant effect. The total effective rate was 90.8%. Conclusion: The topical application of the medicinal paste at Shenque (CV 8) has a better therapeutic effect in treatment of infantile upper respiratory tract infection and is worth of popularizing.
