Research progress on the mechanism of acupuncture improving Alzheimer’s disease by regulating mitochondrial function
“Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a common neurodegenerative disease, and mitochondrial dysfunction is closely related to the onset of AD. Acupuncture is one of the effective methods for treating AD, which can significantly improve AD symptoms, delay disease progression, and its mechanism of action is constantly being studied. Acupuncture mainly restores and maintains mitochondrial function by protecting mitochondrial morphology, improving mitochondrial dynamics, regulating mitochondrial energy metabolism, regulating mitochondrial autophagy, maintaining mitochondrial calcium homeostasis, reducing oxidative stress damage, and inhibiting cell apoptosis, playing a therapeutic role in Alzheimer's disease. There are shortcomings in existing research, such as a focus on a single factor of mitochondrial dysfunction, insufficient consideration of the involvement mechanisms of cells other than neurons, incomplete experimental design schemes, and failure to consider the relationship between disease staging and mitochondrial dysfunction. It is necessary for future research to explore the functional status of mitochondria at different stages of AD pathogenesis and the specific regulatory effects of acupuncture.”
