The protection of acupuncture on stress-and indomethacine-induced gastric mucosal damage in rats was investigated.The results were as follows: (1)When the acupoint Zusanli and Shangjuxu were electroacupunctured

the development of gastric mucosal damage induced by stress and indomethaine were significantly inhibited. (2)Electrogastrogram(EGG)was recorded in the 2 types of gastric mu- cosal damage in rats.Decreased the amplitude and frequency of the EGG were found in the recording from both types of gastric mucosal damage in rats. Electro-acupuncture may have an advantageous biphasic modulating effect. (3)The pH value on gastric mucosal surface was measured by an anti- mony PH electrode.Electro-acupuncture can significantly reduced pH value from antecedent high level to aiow. From the above results it is suggested that electro-acupuncture may exert a significant protective effect on the stress and indomethicine-induced gastric mucosal damage

and prevent gastric-ulcerative initiation.The anti-ulcerative effect of acupuncture may be resulted on promoting the biosynthesis and release of prostaglandins in gastric mucosa.
