the authors review development of neurobiochemical researches on acupuncture treatment of ischemic cerebral apoplexy from the effects of acupuncture in 1) regulating energy metabolism and checking the release of excitatory amino acids of the neurons in the brain; 2) maintaining the balance of extra and intra cellular ions
preventing intracellular Ca 2+ from overload; 3) resisting free radicals; 4) modulating levels of neurotransmitters; and 5) down regulating or up regulating gene expression of the neurons and reducing apoptosis to protect cerebral neurons. The aforementioned effects of acupuncture may be responsible for its action in improving symptoms and signs of ischemic stroke patients.
