The purpose of this study was to examine the inhibitory effects of acupuncture on cataractogenesis and glutathione(GSH)-depleted of lens in new born rats with buthionine sulfoximine (BSO)Methods:The glutathione synthesis inhibitor,BSO (3 mmol/kg) plus solvent were intraperitoneally injected into new born rats for three consecutive days beginning at postnatal day 2These GSH depleted rats develop cataractsHalf of the BSO-injected animals received a daily treatment of acupuncture for 30 min before the injection of BSO plus solvent while all of untreated age-matched new born rats(control group) received a daily injection of the solventThe incidence of cataracts was observed on day 9 or day 17 while the eyes of the new born rats had openedBoth reduced glutathione(GSH) and oxidized glutathione(GSSG) levels in lens were measured Results:The total animals be killed on either day 9 or day 17.The incidence of cataracts in all animals treated with BSO plus solvent was 8889%(16/18)The lenticular GSH levels at day 9 were significantly lower(compared to control group), P<0001The lenticular GSH levels at day 17 were higher than that at day 9, P<0001The incidence of cataracts in all animals co-treated with acupuncture was 214%(3/14);it was only 0%(0/5)at day 9, the incidence of cataracts was significantly decreased, P<005 The lenticular GSH levels at day 17 were significantly higher than that of BSO group or control group(P<005) and than GSH levels at day 9 (P<0001)The incidence of cataracts in all animals of non -treatment control group was 0%(0/18)Conclusion:The inhibitory effect of acupuncture treatment on cataracts formation in this study could be due to acupuncture's free radical scavenging activity or due to its stimulatory effect on glutathione production
